Started second in my new series. Sooo I either really sprained my ankle or fractured it Sunday. I was able to sketch/paint the layout with my foot propped up. I’m bumming big time. This oneis a blend of my second born and me. It’s hard to see but she’s sitting looking over her back

This Thanksgiving my family drove up to visit my sister and her family in Redding. We went up to see where our childhood houses burnt down in Old Shasta and the first one is on Victoria overlooking the valley. We visited the house we first lived in for over a year, before we moved into the one in Old Shasta which we were in s long time before my parents split, our dad still lived there but we hadn’t spoke since I was 19. The first pic is the property where our first house was. The elementary school I went to before 5th was saved. Which was across from our dad’s house. I was sick with a cold so I didn’t visit any old friends. I plan to come up more often. I miss it up there so much. In these pics where the sawdust is , is where the House was. The fireplace remains are off to the side. I took s brick to keep. I guess FEMA came through and cleared all the rubble. I debated on posting but then I realized my new work is inspired by this. My vulnerability as an artist is already out there. This is just the “back” story to it. Maybe it’ll help people to realize the truth behind my work. 48x48 abstract Portraiture Done

I’m varnishing the rework of my abstract portrait/koi piece. This took a long time to get that dimension. It’s one of my favorites now. I switched from Gamvar varnish to Golden UVF, this one needs solid UV protectant.

Finished the rework of this 48x48 abstract Koi.Those who know me, know I’m obsessed with Koi fish. I have small ones but I love to go to the Koi Farm and just watch the big ones swim. So beautiful. Graceful.

More progress on the fireplace from my childhood home. I don’t understand how some, close to me...feel awkward or reserved about me painting this after it burnt down. It’s the healthiest thing a person can do and I wouldn’t be painting it if I didn’t want to talk or share my story. It’s good for me. No one should ever bottle any thing that hurts. Follow me into the dark

This past summer my childhood home and the surrounding area burnt to the ground in the Carr Fire. It’s extremely hard for me to put my vulnerability out there, but I’ve realized in order to tamp into my true self I need to. What devasted me about losing this house is that I haven’t spoken to my father who raised us in this house in over 21 years. I’ve always been very guarded about the whole thing. My  dad still owned the house with his new family when it was lost. I left Redding when I was 18; I married young. Too young. I look back now and know I was trying to escape. Since I left I’ve only visited a few times. My sis and her family still live up there too. I couldn’t explain it until now why I couldn’t go home. I just knew it hurt too much. That town and house held so many memories for me. I guess I always thought I’d be able to see my old house, my room, my tree swing, the old cemetery me and my brother used to hike to in the hills of Old Shasta, my tree fort, Mr. Hardt’s Property where I pretended I was a professional cyclist-taking a tumbler in my bike that I still have the scar on my knee. But all of it is burned and gone. All the trees are gone. 

So, since the fire I have felt huge growth as an artist. Quite a big boom. I can see on all my old pieces what needs to be done. I cannot work fast enough. I know when I get blocked I just need to look at the photo my sister sent me of our old fireplace standing among the ruble. I started the layout of painting this old fireplace today. The one we hung out Christmas stockings on. The one I sat on a day before I left for my life in Southern California. I have the photo of me sitting on my brothers lap on it. So I’m painting this for me. As a reminder. A reminder that, that grief is a part of me. That I can go home still; even if I have no home. It’s still in my heart.  

Note: I am remarried, the first one didn’t work out

I added in sheer violet. Heavy body paint ratio 1/2 paint to 1/2 Golden Gel medium. If you don’t have retarder you’re going to need to wet it down often as the gel dries fast I went around the Red and magenta borders with the violet to soften. Inner corner eye, bottom lip, outer rim of nostril, chin-then swipe down. Added violet around blooms. Over the whiteadded in water to my brush.
